Theatre on the Bay, Cape Town Revisited

Camps Bay has been the home of Pieter Toerien Productions for nearly 3 decades and the Theatre on the Bay has been synonymous with quality theatre, since inception.

Prosound is proud to have been associated with PTP throughout this period and have been responsible for the sound and sound design on many prestigious productions.

Recently the theatre has been subjected to a major construction overhaul to accommodate the innovative Luitingh, Alexander Musical Theatre Academy, LAMTA which opened its doors for the first time in January.

LAMTA, currently hosting 31 students for the year, had an immediate requirement for sound systems across the various studios. Prosound presented the Electro-Voice Evolve 50 as the ideal solution.

EVOLVE 50 offers true “plug & play” setup and operation across every detail. Assembly is quick via a symmetrical aluminium subwoofer pole with integrated wiring. Designed to deliver an uncompromising combination of light weight, low profile looks, and superior Electro-Voice Sound quality, THE EVOLVE 50 SETS A NEW PERFORMANCE STANDARD FOR POWERED COLUMN SYSTEMS.

LAMTA have currently purchased three units, one of which is white to suit the studio décor. Anton and Duane, the masterminds behind LAMTA, are supremely happy with their purchase and believe that the quality and ease of use make the Evolve the ideal choice for this current and any future similar ventures.

The construction of the studios also meant changes to the actual theatre space below and with “Into the Woods” being the first musical to take place in the changed venue, it was with some trepidation that sound designer Mark Malherbe Technical Director of Prosound approached the production.

A co-production presented by Pieter Toerien Productions and Kickstart had previously successfully run in Durban and is looking forward to similar reactions in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

With an absolute emphasis on vocal quality and clarity for the complex lyrics, Mark again relied on tried and trusted product choices, primarily Meyer Sound loudspeakers and DPA microphones.

Reaction to the show has been extremely positive with many compliments about the sound.
