Iconic landmarks around the world will turn red in a global display of unity on July 20
Johannesburg, 10 July 2018 – Special Olympics South Africa will flick the switch and turn on the Nelson Mandela statue red in a global display of unity on July 20 as part of the Special Olympics 50th Anniversary Celebration. The act represents the dawn of the Inclusion Revolution—Special Olympics’ mission to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities (ID) worldwide and create inclusive communities.
In addition to the Nelson Mandela statue, more than 70 landmarks worldwide will
participate in the Light Up for Inclusion initiative, creating a global display of tolerance, respect and celebration of difference.
We will be on site on Friday to turn the Nelson Mandela Statue red, as part of this great worldwide initiative.

Prosound was contacted by PPA and Associates to provide a solution to light the Nelson Mandela statue at the Nelson Mandela Square complex in Sandton.
Prosound is the South African Distributor of Griven Architectural LED products, an Italian manufacturer of quality LED architectural products.
Prosound set up the demo on a chilly evening in June, using a Griven ONYX LED Fixture and an ETC ColorSource console.
Griven is an Italian manufacturer of quality LED architectural products, distributed in South Africa by Prosound.
The client requested several scenes ranging from Warm White to Cool White, which were programmed beforehand by Prosound’s HOD of Training and Development, Lee Brune. The main challenge to be overcome for this demo was where to put the ONYX RGBW LED fixture. The only area that could be provided was a vacant office space which had a throw distance of roughly 40 meters from the Nelson Mandela statue.
The demo was an incredible success with tourists stopping to take photos of the well-lit Madiba, usually only possible in the daytime.
The ONYX fixture will be permanently installed in the Nelson Mandela Square, programmed on a touch screen wall mount controller.
Well done to Mr Ian Blair and the lighting team.
