Anne Valentino from ETC holds lighting workshops in Johannesburg and Cape TownAs far as theatrical lighting systems go, Anne Valentino is a living legend. She has been involved with many of the most important lighting console developments over the last 30 years that include the Strand Light Pallette, the Vari-Light Virtuoso and of course, the ETC Eos family, which she helped build from the ground up.

The Eos family is loved by programmers and designers all over the world for its simple and intuitive programming interface which is nonetheless extremely powerful. With un-matched colour picking technology, user interface innovations and the ability to speak the same language that a designer talking to his/her programmer would use, Eos has entrenched itself as THE console on Broadway and the West End, not to mention many theatres in between. It is Anne who has been at the forefront of those developments which she has been implementing ever since Eos was launched in the early 2000s.

ETC Consoles are used in the Artscape Opera and Drama Theatre, The Fugard Theatre, the HB Thom Theatre and the Little Theatre, and will be in operation in all venues at this year’s Grahamstown Festival.

South African programmers and lighting designers were recently treated to the privilege of getting to meet and interact with Anne on console philosophies and how the entire idea of control has evolved since the early days of piano boards and pre-set desks. With presentations in both Cape Town at the Artscape Theatre, and in Johannesburg at the Market Theatre, Anne was able to share some of her knowledge and experience with our young up and coming theatre practitioners and speak to them in depth about how and why they need to think about the way they go about their work with regards to lighting.

As the official distributor of ETC in South Africa, ApexPro is extremely proud to have been able to host this dynamic woman who is at the top of her game. We would also like to extend our gratitude and thanks to ETC and Jeremy Roberts in particular for making it all happen.

And then of course we would like to thank all of the wonderful, excellent and talented individuals who joined us at these presentations and who we trust left feeling enriched, inspired and ready to take on the world.

If you would like to know more about ETC, the Eos family and/or lighting in general, please don’t hesitate to contact the ApexPro ETC Product manager at He will be happy to chat.
