Our story is firmly rooted in live events and technical production, and our experience in this field has shaped the company that we are today.
Back in 1973, sound equipment for professional musicians, sports events and large gatherings was, well, a tad rudimentary. 100w loudspeakers and amplifiers were considered seriously powerful, and sound mixers were often just a set of simple volume controls. Despite the relatively crude technology, a professional audio industry was beginning to take shape. And so Prosound was born – the first company in Southern Africa dedicated solely to the supply and rental of performance standard sound equipment.
In 1974, we supplied the entire sound system for Joseph, the 1st ever large- scale rock musical in South Africa. We soon became the sound company of choice for rising African stars, as well as the preferred supplier for touring acts like Albert Hammond, Rabbitt, Dave Brubeck and Barney Kessel. Bigger concerts followed, including Paul Simon’s Graceland tour, UB40, and the Human Rights Now World Tour in Harare – at the time the largest events of their kind in the region. We also provided the unique and complex sound and staging solution for Elton John & Jean Michelle Jarre at Sun City.
In time, we began to add sporting, religious and political events to our portfolio, including some of the most iconic moments of our times: the Papal Tour of Africa; the Nelson Mandela Homecoming Rallies celebrations in 1991; the return of Sam Nujoma to Namibia; the Namibian Independence Ceremony; and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 1994, as the world celebrated the birth of The Rainbow Nation, Prosound was there yet again, as the technical design team and project managers for Nelson Mandela’s inauguration.
As the industry has evolved, so too has Prosound. As early as the late eighties, instead of continuing a monopoly on the rental business Prosound decided to pull out our rental division from the local industry, helping to develop and nurture numerous local rental houses in the process. Today we enjoy an excellent relationship with many of these companies. By focusing on live events over the years, we have honed in on our core strengths: technical production, project management and consulting, thereby enabling us to apply unmatched, world-class expertise to any kind of live event, anywhere in the world.
In 2014, we took the decision to sell our rental hardware division. This afforded us the opportunity to absorb a highly skilled team of technical staff members into our core operations, to support our sales, installation, repair, design and technical production service teams.
The team also provides essential training to clients, as well as internal training to our sales staff, enabling them to offer clients the best possible solution at all times.
Our Technical Services & Support team is cross-disciplined, covering professional audio, power, lighting, structures, video, eventing, cabling, health and safety, drawings and verification.
In an industry saturated with professional equipment and rental companies, we believe it is essential to have a team that supports the products that we sell and the systems that we design. This ultimately ensures longevity in the product, provides the building blocks for system expansion and assists in the growth of companies within our industry.
