Port Elizabeth Opera House Sound System Upgrade
As a result of their continual technical support of the venue, Magnetic Storm of PE, were approached by the Port Elizabeth Opera House to do a design supply bid for an upgraded sound system.
Magnetic Storm in turn approached Prosound in Johannesburg for assistance in designing a loudspeaker system that would not only meet the current demands of the venue but would continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
The venue is a receiving house and accommodates productions from local amateur dramatics through to top imported theatrical shows. The loudspeaker system had to suit all of these varying requirements whilst allowing for quality reproduction.
Prosound’s design is based around the Meyer sound self powered loudspeaker systems as used in many theatrical productions both locally and internationally.
The system comprises a pair of UPQ’s for coverage of the balcony, a pair of UPQ’s for coverage of the mid section of the stalls, 2 UPJ’s for coverage of the front section of the stalls, all of these units are located left/right of the proscenium. In addition 4 UPM-1P units are located under the balcony for the seats at the rear of the stalls and to ensure correct sound imagery for seats closer to the stage 8 Electro-Voice S40 compact loudspeakers are used as “front fills” built into the stage edge.
Additional bass in provided by 2 Meyer Sound 600HP sub bass loudspeakers.
All system processing (matrix, equalisation, delays) is via the Meyer Sound Galileo digital signal processor.
Prosound assisted with the final system commissioning and staff training. The first show to utilise the new hardware will be the Australian touring production of Beatlemania.
